Stroud Choral Society
Thank you for your interest in joining Stroud Choral Society. We hope the following information about us will be helpful. If you wish to apply to join the choir, please complete the form on this page and return it to us.
Stroud Choral Society, one of the oldest in the UK, is a large, but friendly choir. We perform a wide variety of music, both sacred and secular, with our children's choir (The Minpins) and Youth Choir joining us for some performances. We give concerts four times a year - typically in November, December(Christmas Concert), March and June and employ wonderful professional orchestras and soloists. We also run workshops from time to time. Because of the size of the choir, we are not able to have a permenant base in Stroud and therefore perform in various locations in the local area and beyond.
Our aim is always to perform to the highest possible standard. We do not expect members to be trained singers or confident sight readers - many of us joined the choir without extensive technical abilities in music. However, we do require commitment to the choir, enthusiasm for the music, and a willingness to practice between rehearsals.
There are a variety if rehearsal aids we encourage everybody to use, such as voice part CD's and free downloads from various websites and YouTube.
All new applicants will first be invited to attend up to four rehearsals to see whether they enjoy singing with us. This will be followed by a short voice assessment in the company of a few existing members of the choir and the Music Director. You will never be asked to sing alone and the piece will be something we have all been practising - you will have been told what it is at least a week prior to the assessment.
Although new members usually join at the beginning of September, there is a possibility to join after Christmas or Easter. However, please note to perform in a concert, members are expected to have attended 75% of rehearsals, with the Music Director making the ultimate decision for members who attend fewer than this.
We rehearse on Mondays between 7.30 - 9.30pm at Marling School Music Centre. Cainscross Road, Stroud from the beginning of September until the end of June with a break at Christmas and Easter.
If you wish to apply to join, please complete and submit the New Members Form and we will contact you in light of current vacancies. Your details will be used only for Society activities and not divulged to third parties.
We look forward to hearing from you!
